How to Create Line Art in GIMP by linkfreak131 How to Create Line Art in GIMP by linkfreak131
My first ever tutorial. ^^ I hope it helps you all out.

This would have been done a lot sooner if PhotoShop wasn't trying to be a smart-Alic all the time closing the file while I was trying to save it. >.< Uhg...

The line art being shown is the one here: [link]

Warning, big file is big. O_O

Question! So after we make the First three layers (image, Papwer, Lineart,) if we are going to do different layers for each section... How do we go about that?

There's actually an easier way of doing lineart that takes less than three minutes www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVH1_V… even though it's a method I discovered, it's someone else who tried it out and found that it works for them too.

Some of the lines (like the eyes) are thicker in some places-like the middle- then the rest of the line. How do you change the thickness of a single line? o.o

I feel a little silly now, lol.
^_^ You are awesome! ♥

I only have one question. :\
When I did a lineart with ink, I found that I couldn't erase it, the ink I means, after I 'set' it down. Do you know why? If so, how do I erase it?

Again, your tutorial is awesome! ^_^

Hm, that is rather odd. The only thing I can think of is is that maybe the layer is locked? Usually on locked layers you can put stuff on it, but then can't erase it. But yeah, that's the only thing I can think of. D: Not sure why it's doing that to you...

I am glad you like it! ;)

:fainted: No, it wasn't locked.

It was that stupid 'brush' of mine. For some reason, it was turned into what it called 'clipboard', which is pretty much nothing. So I changed it and the eraser finally worked. Blleehhh. What an idiot I was, lol.

^_^ Thank for replying! It took me a while to figure it out. ._.; What fun. lol.

And yes I do! XD ♥

okay now i has a question! :D
i was wondering like when you were "anchoring" the rest of that line with her upper eye lash, how did you connect it?
also how do you know when to make the lines thicker or thinner?
cheerski!

When connecting it, you have to do it by hand. I'll try to explain it to you through words:

When you're done putting all your anchors on, except for the last one, just click anywhere, even if it's off from the line(s) you're trying to ink. Then drag that last anchor over to the anchor that you first put down; let the circle meet each other, or, overlap each other, as best as you can. Kinda like this:

Turn this:

----() ()-----

Into this:

----()-----

I hope I explained it well for you. If not, just let me know and I'll try recording it, or taking some screen shots of it for you. =)

As for the thickness in lines, it really just depends on the picture, and what it is you're trying to ink; aesthetic taste also come in. I don't like to use really big, thick, lines (anything over 5), but again, it really depends on what you're inking. For skin, I like to just use 2 or 3. For hair, I sometimes do a combination of 1, 2, and sometimes even 3, depending on the fullness of the hair. For clothing, usually 2 and/or 3, but it depends...

Hope that helped. ^^U

(i promise! last question! lol)

Oh no, please ask as many as you want! xD

Well, the only way that I would no of would be to either go by hand over the parts you want to be thicker, or just re-doing it. Sometimes, if some lines came out too small for me, I wouldn't erase them and start over, but I would just go over them with new anchor points again, just going one point higher than before.

okay how do you create circles?
like for eyes?

Ah, circles are hard. >.< After some experimenting, the way I do it I take the circle tool (not really sure what it's called, but it makes an outline of a perfect circle for you. It's icon looks like a circle.), put to where I want to the circle to be at, fill it it in completely, then go back and make another circle, only a little bit smaller, put it inside the bigger circle, and then erase everything that was in the smaller circle. =)

Hope that made any sence. ^^U
